![]() ![]() Regarding the coil readings, the good coil showed no continuity when the probes were held in the coil tower to both the + and – posts on the top of the coil. I am not an electrical wiz, so please just look at the ratings from the new stator, (old one didn’t register anything) and the good coil (actually a used coil from a 1970 7.5HP, that used the same part number) and use for reference when you try to diagnose a no spark problem with a 1970 – 71 Mercs with the phase maker ignition. You just run the 2nd orange wire to ground. ![]() Please note that the new CDI stator has 2 wires vs. ![]() If the motor is over 30 horsepower, then use premium unleaded gasoline. The stator was bad, and so was the coil ! I have posted a few OHM readings from the new stator, and the replacement working coil (first coil picture) below. For a Mercury two-stroke model, 2- to 20-horsepower outboard motor manufactured before 1980, use a blend of unleaded gasoline with a posted octane minimum of 91 and Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard Oil at a ration of 50 parts fuel to one part oil. Hi All, got the new parts installed and now have spark. ![]()
